Hopkin S Particle Slip Velocity Chart
An example problem follows Hopkins slip velocity chart.
Hopkin ran over 2,000 dynamic particle lifting tests with a 8 foot long 4.5" diameter vertical tube with 13 types of mud and 52 particle shapes and sizes. The particles were circulated from the bottom of the tube to the top with the fluid in laminar, transitional, and turbulent flow. Mud MUD WEIGHT MARSH FUNNEL VISCOSITY AND pH Drilling Engineering" href="/engineering-3/mud-weight-marsh-funnel-viscosity-and-ph.html">Marsh funnel viscosities ranged from 26 to 1,000 seconds/qt. A minimum of three data points were collected for each test.

A curve fit of his graph (not shown) which presents the effect of mud weight on slip velocity gave
Fmw = 2.117- 0.1648 * MW + 0.003681 *MW2 Thus, the adjusted slip velocity is (Vsc is taken from Hopkins figure) V = F * V
